Awarded every three years by the Washington National Opera, the TVA is designed to support the training and increase the visibility of transgender or nonbinary opera singers through career training, artistic coaching, a performance with the Cafritz Young Artists, and a cash prize of $5,000. The Award was conceived by filmmaker and librettist Kimberly Reed and created in partnership with composer Laura Kaminsky and opera librettist Mark Campbell, the collaborative team behind the groundbreaking opera As One. The TVA was developed to create more space in opera for artists who identify as transgender or nonbinary. This award was announced today in recognition of “International Transgender Day of Visibility,” which is celebrated on March 31 each year and raises worldwide awareness of transgender people.
